Libero (Anche libero va bene)
This debut film as a director by actor Kim Rossi Stuart
is a powerful story of the effect of dysfunctional parents on their children, especially as seen through the eyes of Tomasso, an eleven year-old. What the parents, in their own immaturity and craziness do and say in front of their children mark their lives forever and Rossi Stuart presents us with a pastiche of those small moments that make the difference.
Alessandro Morace as Tomasso is a real find
and does a great understated job against the histrionics (also very good) of Rossi Stuart as the father and Barbora Bobulova as the mother.
The scenes of his life, the swimming club, the school, lunches with family friends are all well portrayed and we get a clear picture of the interplay between parents and children.
While it may not be the greatest film out, Libero is honest and authentic and suitably subtle to give us some very telling messages on this area that is not so often dealt with so openly.
