Nominees:
[ Eric Bana (Munich)
[ Nicolas Cage (The Weather Man, Lord of War)
[ Romain Duris (De battre mon coeur s’est arreté)
[ Ralph Fiennes (The White Countess)
[ Olivier Gourmet (Le Fils)
[ Bill Murray (Broken Flowers)
[ Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the Line)
[ Philip Seymour Hoffmann (Capote)
A mixture of old faces and newcomers. Bana is a solid and compelling centre for Munich and must get more plum roles after this. Fiennes is brilliant as the blind ex-diplomat, Gourmet is the anti-star in Le Fils and creates a fascinating and monosyllabic character. Murray is all magnetic again as the pathetic star of Broken Flowers.
Special Mention
Nicolas Cage
Great work in two films that have not perhaps had the impact they deserve: The Weather Man and Lord of War.
Winner
Philip Seymour Hoffmann
Almost inevitable that this portrayal of Truman Capote would win it for Seymour Hoffmann. His is an unlikeable character and yet as we watch this performance, we are mesmerised by the details the actor wrings out of this fussy man. A nugget of acting and preparation we see the transformation in Capote’s mind and spirit during the film.
