What a difficult category! All excellent works with Andrew Lesnie blending reality and fantasy in King Kong, Lubezski capturing the hues of 16th century North America, Chris Menges the arid desert of New Mexico and Xi Ping, the colours and dance of historical Chinese martial arts.
Special Mentions
Robert Elswit for the versatility of two very different films, Good night and good luck with its smoky black and white had more class than anything this year.
Gyula Pados created almost artistic beauty for the concentration camps with the rancid sepia of Fateless, repelling and somehow amazingly beautiful – you felt you were there
Winner
Sabine Lancelin and Matias Mesa
Probably the poorest cousin financially of this category but the work these two did with the swimming sequences in Agua was remarkable. The spectator was in the water with the swimmers, you could feel it around you – an absolutely superb effect.
