The Devil wears Prada
A strange film in the sense that it purports to be a comedy but apart from a few in-jokes and some exaggerations, it really is nothing of the sort. At least for me.
What it is is a commentary on the border between life and work and what we choose to give priority to. This is a typical modern dilemma – sacrifice your time and many of your values and have access to the top circles. An old dilemma really – do what I say and you shall get the riches. In that way, the film is interesting and its application to the fashion business 2006 raises some interesting points. As a story and as a means of making you feel for the characters I found it less attractive. The fashion is great though and the acting makes up for the rather rough sketches of some of the characters. Of course, Meryl Streep
is majestic as the bitch editor Miranda Priestley – and totally credible. Anne Hathaway as Andy, the Cinderella assistant
is also suitably cast and comes across well in her transformation to someone who starts to explore her own dark Miranda-like corners. Emily Blunt is also great as the other assistant showing that she has a great new career ahead of her. On the male side, Stanley Tucci
does a very nice job as Nigel and Adrian Grenier
is OK as the chef boyfriend.
I liked it but it would not go down as a great film.
