The War of the Worlds
I have some problems with Spielberg. Undeniably, he has great talent and vision and has produced some excellent films, some of which I have liked a lot. I do find however that his ‘messages’ can overwhelm his films and become responsible for altering his perspective and for being opportunities to tug at the heartstrings of people. Having said that it is certain that at least he does construct a perspective rather than just show the basics as other directors may do.
So, what’s with this film? I personally didn’t like it much. Too much violence and destruction, too much blood, too much selfish human behaviour. I really can do without this sort of message even though it may help 90 % of the movie goers to identify with the film. Too much Dakota Fanning
who really needs a good talking to – I`d be tempted to feed her to the aliens straight off. So, I found the voyage of redemption and growth into father figure of Tom Cruise a little over the top – for such a great crane driver how come he can’t organise the rest of his life??? Yes, this family group was not the one I would have chosen to follow in the battle against the monsters. There were some great scenes – especially as the snake monster explores the basement, the flaming train and the ferry but all in all I went to bed hoping not to have nightmares and feeling that I would have liked to have seen an adaptation by someone else.
